If you have had the profound pleasure of catching Lettuce live then you understand the sheer power of their performances. The group may not have invented funk music, but they have pioneered a sound all their own, creating an amalgam of old school favorites and futuristic intonation. Now fans will be able to experience the band in a way like never before with their documentary “Let Us Play.” The half-hour long film chronicles 6 months of Lettuce on the road, in the studio, and what it’s taken to create and record their newest funk production “CRUSH,” premiered by the New York Times and out everywhere November 6th.
Born in the summer of ‘92, Lettuce came to be when it’s members attended a music program as teenagers at Berklee College in Boston. They jammed for a summer before resigning to their respective homes, only to reunite as undergrads at Berklee two years later. After hitting the club circuit, begging owners to “let us play,” the band’s name was born. Their first album “Outta Here” was released in 2001, followed in 2003 by “Live in Tokyo.” Five years later “Rage” came out, featuring covers of old classics “Move On Up” and “Express Yourself.” Since then Lettuce has taken funk by storm, their vast collection of talents melting into a spiritual release of pure musicianship that their audience can only hope to keep up with. Their new documentary “Let Us Play” will feature live shows, interviews, and exclusive footage of the guys from the road. You will have the chance to see who these musicians are as people, and how they have evolved from raw talent to finely honed artisans.
Lettuce has also released their newest single from the upcoming “CRUSH” album entitled “Phyllis.” Should this track be any indication of what we can expect from the rest of the album, prepare to get funked. The sound is a cross of Lettuce’s signature funk beats and bright horns with a synthy downtempo vibe.
If there’s one thing Lettuce has perfected, it’s how to keep their fans grooving. Their longevity and continual evolution have found the balance of classic and progressive, giving way to a creative outpouring of artistic ability, only trumped by the energy of their crowds. Look for the documentary “Let Us Play” to come out soon, as well as the new album “CRUSH” to be released on November 6th! You can keep up with the band at their website www.lettucefunk.com!
