TweetHere at All Good Records, we have genuine appreciation for the like minded creatives that surround us on a daily basis. From photographers and musicians to graphic designers, lighting specialists, and more! We're going to start shining light on the brilliant individuals that help shape this scene.
Ellen is a young woman from Detroit that has a penchant for stimulating patterns and designs. Whether it's a mural in Austin for SXSW or helping Grant create the GRiZMAS poster - Ellen is always finding a way to leave her mark in this world.
It sounds cliche, but I think I've just always been making things. I went to a Waldorf school for elementary/middle school, and part of the pedagogical philosophy involved integrating creativity and art into all aspects of education. I learned how to knit and sew when I was 7. We had a big garden at school where we farmed fruits and vegetables, and that definitely awakened my interest in making things with my hands.
Honestly, I can't really remember a time when I wasn't painting or drawing.
Things that fuel my creativity include (but are not limited to) puns, breakfast tacos, architecture, patterns, talking to myself, bike rides, all my fellow Detroit creatives who are always making strange and wonderful things, Sriracha, Instagram, eavesdropping, the internet, laughing all the time, ceilings, floors and thrifting.
Usually, I start a project and then something unexpected happens and that's when the real magic begins.
This is the first I've mentioned it publicly, but I'm thrilled to announce that I'll be selling a collection of small works on 1xRUN.com and will have a casual studio opening in early July to accompany the online launch. I have several mural projects in the works, am preparing for a group show later in the summer and am continuing to collaborate with Patrick Ethen, an amazing local architect/installation artist/lighting designer.
I recently resigned from my full-time position as an art director at a big advertising agency to just spend my time making as much work as I possibly can, digging deep into my own style and process to really push myself creatively.
Well you would definitely hear some Detroit techno classics -Theo Parrish, Kevin Saunderson, Juan Atkins, Moodymann - followed by my friends Humons and Gosh Pith.
I never get sick of Bonobo or Four Tet, and if I'm vibing in my studio I usually play Motor City Drum Ensemble, Maya Jane Coles, Youandewan or Bob Moses. If it's late night, then it's either Rrose or whatever is on WDET Alpha because that station is tits.
Ellen has also been partaking in the #100DayChallenge throwing her own twist on it and uploading stimulating patterns to her Facebook account. Check out the gallery below with some of our favorites!
